THE FUTURE OF THE COMPACT DISC
--------------------------------
I might have already said this sixteen times, but I've compiled these
articles from the Future Entertainment Show in London, England.
The CD-32 looked beautiful, but I was more amazed by the.....ohhh... I
can hardly bring myself to say it... The CD-I. The CD-32 is good, and I
can understand Commodore putting "TO BE THIS GOOD WOULD TAKE SEGA AGES"
in their adverts, but it just doesn't have the backing from the software
companies that it needs. I saw a game called 7th Quest on the CD-I, and
it wiped the floor with anything the Mega-CD could do. A remote control
lets you turn, pick up, inspect and open anything in the game (it was
an adventure). But it wouldn't just load a fancy picture when you
turned 90 degrees, it would actually move everything....just as if you
looked around your room now.
I'm writing loads of articles on inter-activity as I think now is the time
of change in the computing world. People were using the small TDK
Mini-CD-Disc at the FES which is read/writable and can hold the same
amount of data as the CD can. An FMV was in use, with the "Top Gun" film
blasting out of the Philips stand in it's (now) digital glory. There are
the frightening prospects, interactive movies are already available....
Remember what used to happen on the Amiga ? Porn, and stacks of it. Okay,
so that won't be possible yet as CD's can't be written-to by consumers,
but some companies are already producing movies like "Foyeur" which
features scantily-clad women all over the place. Just imagine the outrage
that would be caused by an interactive XXX porn movie ! Yeah, the
Government would go bananas....and as for Mary Whitehouse..... Oooo !
Looking even further into the future, imagine, it's the year 2010.
Everyone uses a mini-CD-disc system to record their favourite soap on
tele, play a game, watch a movie, inter-act with "Big Bessy" on the
XXX disc from the rental shop or even read their favourite PD magazine !
Would kids from that generation be affected ? Would they start to order
real people around just because they can on their Interactive CD
Recorder ? Would Mom order the grocery by inserting her shopping disc
and sending via cable to SafeWay ? Who knows ? Am I talking a load of
crap ? If I'd said that we'd be watching and being "interactive" with a
full-length movie on a piece of round plastic 10 years ago, people would
have laughed ! So what will happen next ? Tell us ! Hit REPLY and send
ZAM back with an SAE for a new copy and your views in the next mag !
